What is Gingivitis? – What are the causes?

Gingivitis is a form of gum disease caused by the build-up of plaque that produces toxins that cause irritation to the gums and make them red, inflamed, puffy, or may lead to bleeding. The most common sign of gingivitis is bleeding from your gums while brushing. If not treated properly at the starting stage, it can lead to much more serious gum disease called periodontitis and also tooth loss.

What causes Gingivitis?

Gingivitis can occur due to the following:

  1. Poor Oral Hygiene – Regular brushing and flossing is important to remove the dental plaque that sticks to your teeth and thus prevent gum disease. Proper brushing techniques should be followed.
  2. Usage of tobacco/ smoking – One of the main risk factors associated with gum disease is the usage of tobacco or smoking. It even affects the results of treatments carried out.
  3. Medications– Some medicines taken for other health conditions may also affect oral health and cause gingival inflammation as a side effect. You should inform your dentist regarding your current medications while consulting for your gum infections or diseases.
  4. Hormonal changes– in some women, hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and monthly menstruation may affect the gum tissues making them highly sensitive and inflamed. It is very important that good oral hygiene is maintained during this time.
  5. Stress- Can also cause gingivitis. Constant stress acts as a trigger to weaken your immune system, hence impacting your resistance to fight against infections and gum diseases.
  6. Nutrition Deficiency– Gum disease can also occur due to lack of nutrition. Everyone requires adequate nutrition to maintain health and fight against infections.
  7. Severe illness/chronic diseases– Diseases such as diabetes, cancer, HIV, and other systemic diseases can badly impact the body’s capability to fight infections. Share your medical history to your dentist always.

Gingivitis if treated early can be easily prevented from progressing to periodontitis which is a serious condition causing bone loss. A regular visit at least every 6 months to your dentist or hygienist for a teeth cleaning is very important to prevent this.
